They may also decide to drum on a part of the house that has the right resonance to attract a mate. Squirrels are the only animals that get into attics that are typically active during the day.

Although birds can do so as well. Raccoons are physically the largest attic intruder so they tend to make louder scratching dragging and thumping noises. If you hear it at night primarily it is either mice raccoons bats or in some cases a flying squirrel. These noises are a lot slower and heavier than squirrel and rodent noises.

The time you hear it is a big clue.
