New Siding Over T111

By jenica lee november 29 2012. My plan simplified is to fur out the walls to plane in with the gables because they overlap the walls wrap with jumbo tex building paper and install hardiplank. But would the double layer of building paper tend to trap moisture in the t1 11. My inclination is to do the former apply a layer of building paper under the new shingles or siding.

T1 11 siding is usually the structural sheathing not merely siding. Hardie panels are not structural you can t just replace one with the other. 15 felt is a poor wrb at best so my gut instinct is that it is a good idea to throw a layer of 30 felt on before. I have been reading various opinions on this topic and hope to generate some conclusion on what is the right choice.

If you are considering new siding i d suggest reviewing all options before proceding with a 2nd layer of t 111 siding. I want to put horizontal and vertical siding over the t1 11 with some wrb and coraplast strips behind it. T1 11 fits that description. Bought in big sheets 4 8 or 4 12 these sheets can cover lots of sf very easily.

Lastly while t 111 siding is one of the least expensive siding products it needs painting or staining every few years and is generally not nearly as durable as many others. In this case would you recommend eliminating the vents. It has a flat roof and no overhang. The facia has vents drilled in it currently.

T1 11 was a bad idea in damp climates for a number of reasons. Above all it is extremely important that there is a substrate whether it s new osb or existing siding in good integrity installed directly to the studs underneath the hardieplank siding. I am working with a customer to install new windows and reside their house which currently has t111 siding with hardiplank lap siding. Now the kicker is whether or not to run 30 felt over the t 111 before siding.
