You can make a fabric covered cornice board out of styrofoam foam insulation or wood.
Installation methods vary depending on the type of hardware you use on the back of the cornice french.
To achieve a flush mount installation most open top cornice boards have keyhole brackets installed on the left and right side a style of hardware that requires the precise placement of hanging.

I opted for wood because the least expensive 10 pine board 8 was around the same price as the other options 10.
Now take your boards and attach the end boards to the long board with screws as shown.
Pre drill holes using a 1 4 drill bit.
Determine the exact placement of the cornice on the window.
Level and mark the holes to install a heavy duty l bracket on the top right side of the window frame.
Then cut two pieces 4 by the height.
Keep in mind how far down over your window you want your cornice to hang that will determine where on the wall you install the 1 x 2 strip of wood your cornice box will.
Every wood cornice begins the same way with cutting and assembling the three sided lidded box photos 2 4.
The cornice is then ready for mounting on the wall by screwing it to a 1 2 that s screwed to the wall above the opening photos 12 14.
Mount it to the wall above the window where you ll be hanging the cornice using a level and 2 wood screws.
I used three screws on each side to make sure it would be secure.
Cut one board the width of your cornice board by the height.
Then you add the trim of your choice photos 5 9 and finish the cornice photo 11.
